Tidewell

Every Homebrew workflow, in one Brew Mac app

Tidewell is a visual Homebrew Package Manager built on top of Homebrew. This page documents each module — what it does, which Brew commands it runs, and what stays under your control.

Module 01

Search & install packages

Browse 8,000+ Homebrew formulas with descriptions, dependencies, install counts and homepage links. Search by name, category or keyword — then install brew packages with one click instead of memorizing terminal syntax.

  • Live search across formulas, casks and taps
  • Full formula detail: version, dependencies, caveats
  • Command preview shows the exact brew install before it runs

How installs work

Tidewell never replaces Homebrew — it calls the official brew binary on your Mac. Every install, upgrade and uninstall is logged in the command panel so you can copy it to Terminal anytime. Formulas install to the correct prefix (/opt/homebrew on Apple silicon, /usr/local on Intel) automatically.

Cask vs formula

Formulas install command-line tools and libraries. Homebrew casks install full Mac applications — VS Code, Chrome, Slack, Docker Desktop and hundreds more. Tidewell lists both in separate views so you always know which type you are installing.

Module 02

Cask app management

Install, update and uninstall Mac apps through Homebrew Cask from the same sidebar. See which casks are outdated, read release notes, and run brew upgrade --cask in one step.

  • Unified list of installed casks with version and size
  • One-click brew uninstall --cask with confirmation
  • Detects casks installed outside Tidewell and shows them too
Modules 03–07

The rest of the Brew Mac toolkit

Batch updates

See every outdated brew package at a glance — formulas and casks together. Select what to upgrade, review changelogs, and run brew upgrade on the selection. Outdated count and last-sync time are always visible in the sidebar.

Tap management

Add, browse and remove third-party Homebrew taps. See which formulas each tap provides before you install anything. Supports both public taps on GitHub and private tap URLs.

Dependency tree

Visualize what a formula depends on before you install. Know exactly what brew will pull in — kegs, linked versions and optional dependencies. Useful when a single install would otherwise surprise you with twenty packages.

Brew Doctor

Run brew doctor from the app and get plain-English explanations of every warning. Guided fix steps for common Homebrew issues — stale lock files, permission problems, outdated Command Line Tools, and conflicting PATH entries.

Homebrew install wizard

If Homebrew is not on your Mac yet, Tidewell runs the official install script from brew.sh with one click — the same script documented by the Homebrew project. Detects existing installations in both standard prefixes automatically.

Scheduled brew update

Set automatic brew update and optional upgrade checks on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. Review pending updates before anything installs — scheduled runs never modify packages without your approval unless you opt in.
